Hey Class of 1975 – hope to see a few old friends again. Has it really been 31 years? Yikes!

  3. Diane Bandura said

Is there anyone out there who attended Burnhamthorpe in the 60’s?

  4. Diane said

I am wondering why the reunion is at The Hollywood and not at the school?

  5. Diane said

    Hi Gayle,
Just a note to say thank you for organizing this … it is not a small undertaking.
I had wondered about Saturday not being at Burnhamthorpe C. I. because some have mentioned to me that it is too expensive for them to attend.
The Hollywood is supposed to be a great place for clubs and organizations to get together and the prices can be quite reasonable. Does the $45.00 include other things or just the dinner?

Welcome to anyone from my era 59-63. Hope to see you on the Dec.9th

The name Gayle Thomas sure rings a bell but I’m having difficulty putting a face with your name. Where did you live when you went to BCI?
This is a great idea and I’m wondering how we can spread the word further.

Who is this MJ that the announcement of this reunion is from? When did they attend BCI?

Also I don’t live in Toronto any more so where is an address that I can send my money to and receive my tickets? Also why is a person that never went to BCI the organizer for this event?

  12. Bill Marshall '63 said

Who cares who arranged it and whether they went to BCI. This is a huge undertaking. There must be 3-4000 alumni. Cut the committee some slack, I’m going to have fun and see some old friends and acquaintances.See you on the 8th,9th,&10th.
Will there be tickets available at the door?

  13. Alex said

    Anyone from class of 76?
I will dig out my yearbooks if I make the trek across the country.
Thanks for organizing and I may be a last minute addition.
I hope Mrs Lauton and her rhythm balls will be there.

Martingrove collegiate raised over $30,000 at their 25th reunion and I’m told have set up a scholarship fund with their proceeds. Can BCI do something similar?

  15. 6 BCI Alumni have a website that hasn’t really been used since May I guess. Busy summer. Feel free to visit and sign up.

I see Ian Gallacher from 58 is going – anyone else? We were the first graduating class from the school (1958) so I hope there will be a few more attending!
Does anyone know anything about Wally Macleod who was also there in 1958?

Here are the answers to some of your questions…
-if there are tickets still available, yes they will be sold at the door. It is best to purchase your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment in the event we are exceeding capacity of the facility
-”NO” there is no “deadline” for tickets but, buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment
-for an address to “mail to” see the announcement above

    Hi Folks

I am part of the organizing committee along with Gayle Thomas, Liz Andrews and Sandy Young (Joy). Three of us all went to BCI.
We have been meeting for the last 8 weeks on Tuesday nights at Gayle’s bar on the Lakeshore.
Here are a few answers to questions that have been coming up in the last few weeks.
If you need tickets here is the contact info
    Mail
    Cheques payable to “Gayle Thomas”
    To: Dickson’s Bar
    3737 Lakeshore Blvd
    Toronto ON
    M8W 1P9

They are $45.00 for the 3 days
The Pub night is Friday and if you just want to go to it, the charge will be $20.00 just for Friday.

We real need volunteers for Friday and Saturday night to help at the doors to sell/take tickets and I’m sure there will be other things to do.

We have already sold 150 tickets and more requests are coming daily.

Tickets will be availabe at the door depending on the numbers sold ahead But can be reserved with payment.

There have been some comments about the cost, it was already established by others and published before Liz. Sandy and I joined the committee. I guess my own feeling is if there is money left over it is going to a local charity. The main focus should be that there is a venue being create to see many people from years past and as far as I am concerned that is PRICELESS.

We are having our next meeting at Dickson’s on the Lakeshore at 7:00 next Tuesday Dec 5 to finalize everything and would appreciate an one to come out and lend a hand.

    Contacts
    Peter Shmagola 905-936-3066
    Liz Andrew 416-503-4167

Just as a heads up for everyone, I drove into Toronto today to purchase tickets at Dicksons on the Lakeshore. They are not open until 3.00 p.m. in the afternoon. So if you are planning on purchasing tickets at this location, make sure you plan your arrival sometime after 3.00 p.m. I believe they are open very late in the evening.
Will drop in again next week or will go to Brampton.

  69. That wasn’t worth a $500.00 expense on my behalf, and a 3 hr. drive under treacherous circumstances. No school tour, no dinner, no dance, no guest book, which was an obvious. Fri. pm the 2.00 cash grab for our sports coat, my wife locked out of the glass cage because she went to the washroom. BCI alumni stuck outside because of the cold. By the way I don’t call buns and meat dinner, same fare as Fri pm. CASH GRAB

  70. Rough math tells me you took in $18000. I would suggest you post a profit & Loss in the very near future.

  71. Scott 79 said

$45 for cold cuts, no band, no organization, no decorations and few lame door prizes. a poor excuse for a reunion,

  72. Peter Shmagola said

    Scott,
Thanks for the comments, apparently your focus was on the venue and not the real reason for the event, which for most people was meeting old school friends.

We will look forward to your contribution to the next effort in organizing an event at BCI.

Thanks for your positive comments. (LOL)

  73. Scott didn’t even mention the venue. All his reasons were valid as mine. I’m going for an audit as Saturday night was thru the OGC. It was a thorough screw up.

  74. John 66 said

Here’s my two cents worth. I had a great time! It was wonderful to see many friends I hadn’t seen for 40 years. And to see them again in our old school, that made it even more special. From my perspective the experience was priceless. The memories from the weekend will stay with me for a very long time. I can’t begin to tell you what a wonderful feeling I have after the weekend and from what I could see the vast majority of people were having a ball.

Was the event and organization perfect? No, lot’s of room for improvements. But I am grateful that a group of people felt the 50th anniversary of our beloved BCI was important enough to organize something like this. If somebody hadn’t done it then it wouldn’t have happened.

Learn from the weak areas and try to improve next time. And if someone can contribute then get involved.

So, thank you very much for those that put the event on. You gave me a wonderful present. I will always remember my evening at BCI celebrating the 50th anniversary!

  75. Evelyn Frantzke, 1977 said

I had a blast!!! Though I missed the Hollywood, it was so great to see those who came to the school on Saturday! I only wish more had come!

The event was a huge undertaking and would be a massive headache for anyone (walk in Gayle’s shoes first)!

To Linda Ozimor, Len Chapman, Al Saunders, Ed Emmons, Glenn Pringle, Susan Wood, Vicki Creston, Susan Moum, Ann Marie Townsend, Lesley Baxter, Paul Berendsen, Sandra Lemoine, Mike Giroux, Paul Giroux, Anna Stitski, Gord Booth, Steve Wroblewski, Larry Rabb and anyone I’ve forgotten to list – thank you so much for your energy and enthusiasm and the warm welcome from everyone! For those I was able to corral – thank you for signing my ‘77 yearbook!

I will always have a place in my heart for everyone from BCI!

Wishing all of you good health, happiness, peace of mind and comfort and joy for the holidays and ever!

  76. Peter Shmagola said

    Hi Bill

It was a pleasure meeting you and others over the weekend.

Thank you John 66 and Evelyn 77 for your positive comments.

    Hind sight is always 20/20.

Bill, I wish you had been part of our planning committee, let’s recap, you indicated on Oct 21 that you would like to help, we had requested help on Nov 29 and listed all the contact numbers none of the committee members recall you calling them to offer help. As you had stated on the website on Oct 29 and I quote “Who cares who arranged it and whether they went to BCI. This is a huge undertaking. There must be 3-4000 alumni” and you were Right!!!

We had no idea how many alumni were going to show up at any of the venues. You were on of the many people that bought tickets at the door, we had no idea how many others were going to do the same. At best it is difficult to know, weeks ahead how many were going to attend and how much food and beverages to have on hand, in hind sight, I think we did a damn good job!

NO SCHOOL TOUR, seen one classroom pretty much seen them all (although there were three rooms open and that was a restriction placed on us by the school board)

NO DINNER, well the notice did say buffet, if you expected steak or rubber chicken dinner you would have paid a lot more for your ticket and would not have been able to buy it at the door.

NO DANCE, it was a committee decision that most people would prefer to “catch up on old times” and we were right, out of the many people that were there very few asked about the dance part.

NO GUEST BOOK, I was looking at all the names on Sunday afternoon who attended so I guess you must have missed signing it, we can put your name in it if like.

The crowd control and coat check was the responsibility of the Hollywood Staff and we had no control over that.

I really take issue with the CASH GRAB comment, where were you when we had to put out our OWN money for advertising, printing tickets, deposits on various items months ago with no idea of how many people were going to attend and if we would get our money back! The number of times I drove to Gayle’s bar on the Lakeshore for meetings from Tottenham ON and spent hours of my time to make sure YOU had a venue to meet YOUR old school mates.
Liz Andrew did a great job along with Sandy Young, Gayle Thomas, Kent Ryder and myself. I throughly enjoyed working with them.

BILL, I will leave you with one comment, based on your negative comments it is very obvious that you have never organized anything but a dinner party at your home, if that!!

We will be publishing the amount of the Charitable contribution in the local paper once all the bills are paid.

Bill for your benefit you are most welcome to call me directly and set up a meeting to review the financials.

  77. I take issue on a couple of areas
1 I asked Mary to e-mail me and tell me what she wanted me to do.
2 I had my ticket ahead of time, my wife didn’t
3 I have done this stuff for a living, 2000 people at the Royal York. Don’t doubt me if you don’t know me. Alot of people have and learned to regret it
4 What was wrong with hot lasagna or pasta dishes?
5 If you put it on the ticket or on the announcement, you must follow thru.
6 What about the people from out of town that could only get there for Sat. night. For $45.00. For what?
7.There was nobody with authority there Fri. or Sat. Everyone left.
8 I am an accountant by profession and I talked alot of people from the 50’s and 60’s into coming. I don’t care about the donation. I care about income and expenditures. Maybe the people who feel they got ripped off will donate back to the charity
9 The announcement and the ticket said “Dinner/Dance”

  78. Susan said

…. sorry to say “DITTO” on what Bill is saying. I arrived later in the evening and was still asked to pay the $45 for the “dinner/dance” when they knew full well that they could no longer provide dinner and never intended to have “dance.” If the intention was to have just a “meeting place” for old pals to chat, then they should have billed it as so. It would appear that the intent was to get maximum income with minimum ependitures… I guess someone will be vacationing somewhere warm …. I would like to see a profit and loss for the event as well! I wonder if the charities named are aware they have money coming to them? I’m sure they would be interested in an accounting of the weekends proceeds as well. Can anyone tell me where the proceeds will be going?

  79. I have had my say, nothing else right now. Anybody wanting to get in touch.E-mail me at

    billmars@wightman.ca

  80. Donna said

I also agree with Bill and Susan. It was poorly organized and this was the general comment I heard from many people. Why wasn’t the downstairs open to take on the overflow at the Hollywood. The upstairs only holds 200 did you think nobody would show? There was no memorabilia at BCI, even a website with old photos would have been fun and it was false advertising to say it was a dinner/dance. Cold cuts with cut up cheese, no dessert is hardly the dinner you would expect for $45.00. Peter, buffet could mean anything which includes hot food so yes it was misleading. I work in the catering and event planning business and an inexpensive meal can be flavourful and presented well if some thought is put into it. If I had known it was going to be such a cheap affair I would have gladly submitted some ideas. Also, I had 3 friends come in at 10:15 and they were charged the $45.00 each. No cash grab there! A number of people wondered when the dance was going to start. But what showed the caliber of class at this event was when I asked the “bartender” for a coke and she put the ice that chilling the beer and wine in my glass. Yuck! The continental breakfast was no better. Yes we all understand it is a huge undertaking to organize an event of this size but if YOU take the job on it should have been done 100%. I think it is your duty to post the financial statement of this event and the charities that will benefit from any profit. Hopefully it will be a charity that benefits the residence of Etobicoke. Maybe the BCI continuing education program. I’m sure, in good faith, you will make these numbers public to disperse the rumours amongst many BCI alumni that this was a “cash grab” event.
Well at least Bloorlea sounds like it has it’s act together. Looking forward to that!

  81. Thanks Donna Maybe I’m not senile

  82. Well Anniversary Committee
Please post your receipts and disbursement statement by Dec.22/06 on this site.I know most expenses are prepaid, so you should be ready to go by then. If you can’t decide on a charity, we will help. Then, maybe everyone can have a Merry Christmas!

Well I won`t need to be made aware of any financial statements in order to enjoy Xmas. I think it`s great that someone took the initiative to arrange something! I only attended the pub night. Stood in line for close to an hour but so many people like myself did not commit until the last moment so I dealt with it. I`m surprised there are all these negative comments. Who cares about the food? and a $2 cash grab? I`m sorry that everyone didn`t enjoy hooking up with old mates….maybe not everyone did..
    I would attend every year!

Sure glad we didn’t go to school with Bill in ‘63. Thanks for putting this together and we had a blast at the Hollywood. Would do it again for the mere cost of $20.00!

Some of those emails of concern being forwarded last Spring and Summer seem far more credible now.

  86. BCI Reunion Committee
Since you could not post the results in a timely fashion, we will move on to the next level. That would be a lawyer’s letter. We will not let this go. We are collectively out alot of money. I personally gave you the benefit of the doubt at the beginning, but not now.
A quote I got this morning on this situation is-If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…

    Move to the next level?????????????????
    A lawyer’s letter?????????????????
    A LAWYERS’S LETTER???????????????????
I mean really, just what the hell is that supposed to do Bill—scare the hell out of everybody????
And just who is “WE” anyhow Bill??????
And just exactly who is paying the $300.00 per hour for a lawyer to write a letter Bill???? Is that coming out of your pocket Bill????? And what laws have been broken here to require a lawyer to write a letter????? And who says that the Reunion Committee has to answer to you in the first place Bill?????? Who has appointed you the be all and end all????? NOT ME Bill.
Me thinks that Bill has far to much idol time on his hands and has no clue as to how to use it constructively.
Give the old grey matter a shake Bill and get yourself a life.
If it looks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, if it swims like a duck, chances are it’s a Bill trying to crawl back into his hole.
Attn: Reunion Committee—-You don’t owe Bill any explanation whatsoever.
If I want to know what happened to all the money, I’m sure I can contact you personally and have a very friendly meeting with you and get all the answers I need without public threats and verbal intimidation.

    P.S. Attn Reunion Committee:

Thanks for a great party. Unlike Bill, a great many of us had a fantastic time. Worth the $45.00 to me to meet old friends and renew aquaintances after all these years.

  89. I won’t answer a diatribe from an anonymous donor. All you are showing is a cover-up. All that has to be done is post the receipts and disbursements on this sight and hopefully it will be all over. The “we” will come up if we have to go to another level. The one thing I will answer is my weekend cost $500 because I had to come from out of town.

Someone, (event organizers?), provided the following notice which was published in the Etobicoke Guardian newspaper prior to the event.

“BURNHAMTHORPE COLLEGIATE 50TH Anniversary celebration for all years at the former BCI. The location has recently changed. School tour included, starts at 4 p.m. Tickets are $45 each and includes a buffet, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Live band/disc jockey. Tickets available at Dickson’s Piano Bar, 3737 Lake Shore Blvd. W., or call 416-259-4343 or e-mail thomasgayle@hotmail.com. For full list of events, contact Gayle Thomas. Funds raised donated to Lakeshore Area Multi-Service Project, Franklin Horner Community Centre”

So let’s get right to the point of the last sentence printed in the notice. Everything can be cleared up by the organizers by addressing that single issue. The only question that the organizers need to answer is very simple. Were funds donated to the organization listed to be the recipient? A public commitment was made to donate the funds, so did it happen?

I would like to apologize to anyone who went to the Ra Ma Da Inn last night for the farewell party only to find that that the management had not kept their word to provide extra staff to accommodate our gathering. There was no staff at all in the hotel.

Rabinder and his buddies created and absolute FUBAR.

Fortunately the desk staff called over to the Valhalla and we relocated in the Norwegian Room.

I received a phone call at about 10:30 pm last night from Bruce Beauchamp, Kamloops. His brother Wayne (class of 75 – I think) came down from Thunder Bay and went to the old Holiday Inn to find it empty. No one redirected him to the Valhalla. Sorry Wayne

In spite of everything I think everyone had a good time. Some more than others :) .
